MACHINE HEAD To Release Demo Version Of New Song ‘Killers & Kings’ For ‘Record Store Day’
Reposted from Blabbermouth.net
As part of this year’s Record Store Day on April 19, San Francisco Bay Area metallers MACHINE HEAD will release a 10-inch vinyl single, with the A-side containing the “demo” version of a new song, “Killers & Kings”. The B-side will be a cover version of the track “Our Darkest Days” from one of MACHINE HEAD‘s favorite bands, IGNITE.
Says MACHINE HEAD guitarist/vocalist Robb Flynn: “I remember growing up in the thrash scene and always wanting to hear the demo version of songs. You searched them out. Thankfully, my buddy Jim was a big ‘tape trader,’ and through trading, we had both METALLICA demos, EXODUS demos, bootlegs of songs sometimes ‘years’ before they came out.
“I knew how to play every note of ‘Pleasure Of The Flesh’ by EXODUS easily two years before the record was out. I had SLAYER‘s ‘Reign In Blood’ three months before it came out. I remember it still had the hi-hat counts starting the songs!!
“My friends and I would debate the merits of each (the demo was always better, LOL!).
“It’s so much cooler to hear it BEFORE the album is out!
“So we’re gonna do that for you.
“I can’t wait for you guys to hear this stuff. Then you can debate it, haha!”
MACHINE HEAD will enter the studio in February to begin recording its new album for a late summer release via the band’s new label, Nuclear Blast Entertainment. Other tentative songtitles set to appear on the CD include “Beneath The Silt”, “Ojos De La Muerte”, “Sail Into The Black” and “Night Of The Long Knives”.
Says Flynn: “The new stuff is turning out better than anyone expected.
“We had THE breakthrough with the song formerly known as ‘Back From The Grave’.
“I’d been working with the string section that played on ‘Locust’, Quartet Rogue, as well as multi-instrumentalist / keyboardist Rhys Fulber, and to quote [METALLICA drummer] Lars Ulrich (who was actually quoting Robert Trujillo), ‘We’re on some NEXT-LEVEL shit!!!’
“With that one song getting finished, I could totally see where the whole record is going. It opened up before my eyes.
“Nothing short of exciting!!!”
Speaking to U.K.’s Metal Hammer magazine, Flynn stated about the band’s new material: “It sounds like MACHINE HEAD! It’s definitely moving forward, which I feel like we’re probably always gonna do.
“We’re not a band that ever looks back. We do our thing and try to take the life experiences that we have and the musicianship that we’ve evolved and try to use it. Obviously, we have our sound and we have the MACHINE HEAD patented harmonics, the downtuned riffs and I sing the way I sing.
“I think Bob Dylan said it best: ‘You just find new ways to say the same thing.’”
Speaking about some of the specific tracks and the lyrical themes covered on the new album, Flynn said: “I’ve got some pretty cool lyrics ready. There’s a song called ‘Night Of The Long Knives’, and it’s pretty fucked! It’s about the Manson murders, and the lyrics are really dark and vicious.
“We’ve found some new twists to give to the MACHINE HEAD sound and some new fire and excitement.”
Asked what the band’s main aims were when they started composing music for the new CD, Flynn said: “Well, it’s nice to try and have a plan, but music has a way of unravelling over time! [Laughs] You’ve just got to roll with it.
“With [2007’s] ‘The Blackening’, I’d love to say I had this grand vision of nine- and 10-minute songs, but the first four songs we wrote were the four shorter songs on the record. For months, there was no indication whatsoever that we’d have 10-minute songs. That stuff came later.
“Human nature wants to control and dictate where things will go, but you can’t. It won’t let you! The more you try, the more it goes, ‘Fuck you.’ It’s going some other way!”
Regarding whether the songwriting process comes more easily after more than two decades as a band, Flynn said: “I just try and do my thing. With this record in particular, I’ve tried to discipline myself more with routine, writing a little bit every day, but for months I was in a riff rut. Every riff I wrote fuckin’ sucked! Then we took a two-week break and I was writing my Facebook journals about the ‘Through The Ashes Of Empires’ [MACHINE HEAD‘s 2003 album] story, and that cleared my head. At the end of those two weeks, the floodgates opened and all hell of riffs poured out. I was so stoked! This torrent of riffs, this molten hot lava, was at my fingertips. It’s such a good feeling.”
Flynn also revealed that MACHINE HEAD has “definitely got some ideas” for the artwork and imagery for the band’s new album, but added: “It’s weird, though, because who the fuck even buys albums anymore?
“An album cover is a necessary thing but for so many people it’s justa little one-and-a-half-inch square on an iPhone.
“We’re going to have a lot of worldwide special editions, so for the people who are still into that stuff, we’ll have some next-level shit. Especially with our new label, Nuclear Blast, they can do all of that stuff. They’re not afraid to do all these crazy, over-the-top special-edition things and big two-foot metal cases and all that.
“I’m a super-nerd collector and that shit rules to me!”
MACHINE HEAD‘s most recent studio release, 2011’s “Unto The Locust”, entered The Billboard 200 chart at position No. 22 — putting them in the Top 25 for the first time in the band’s history.
Founded in 2007 and officially kicked off in 2008 by METALLICA, Record Store Day normally takes place on the third Saturday of every April and brings together artists and independently owned record stores around the world to celebrate the art of music. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and sold in independent stores.

LOST SOCIETY: ‘Terror Hungry’ Cover Artwork Unveiled
Reposted from Blabbermouth.net
Finnish thrashers LOST SOCIETY will release their new album, “Terror Hungry”, on April 4 via Nuclear Blast Records. Produced by Nino Laurenne (AMORPHIS, ENSIFERUM, LORDI) at Sonic Pump studios (FINNTROLL, SONATA ARCTICA, OMNIUM GATHERUM), the CD sees the “Finns shred their way with the energy and speed of an out-of-control freight train, rolling downhill on the way to thrash Olymp,” according to a press release.
The “Terror Hungry” artwork was created by Jan Meininghaus (BOLT THROWER, SICK OF IT ALL, U.D.O., HOLY MOSES).
Comments LOST SOCIETY mastermind Samy Elbanna: “We were totally blown away with the sketch we got, and even more so when we got the final artwork!!
“The cover really fits the theme of the album as it has a more dark feel to it and it’s brutal as fuck! The dude holding the bloody machete is definitely terror hungry!
“Jan did an awesome job; this cover is sick!”
Adds Meininghaus: “I was asked to do LOST SOCIETY‘s new album cover and first of all I had to face the fact that I had to follow their debut album’s art that was created by the legendary Ed Repka. One of the true heros of my own thrash-metal days. So I decided to go a different way and create the band’s cover idea in a much darker and less cartoony mood than the debut’s.
“LOST SOCIETY‘s musical style and their approach to metal is very ’80s Bay Area to me, so I thought it might be fun to paint something that might have been on one of those record covers these days.
“I listened to LOST SOCIETY and my old EXODUS, TESTAMENT and FORBIDDEN vinyls and it was a blast to come up with ‘Terror Hungry’ artwork!”
“Terror Hungry” track listing:
02. Game Over
04. Lethal Pleasure
05. Terror Hungry
06. Snowroad Blowout
07. Tyrant Takeover
08. Overdosed Brain
09. Thrashed Reality
11. Brewtal Awakening
12. Mosh It Up
13. Wasted After Midnight
14. You Can’t Stop Rock ‘N’ Roll
Comments Samy Elbanna: “LOST SOCIETY is back, and we’re angrier than ever!
“The new album, ‘Terror Hungry’, is a full-on thrash album from start to finish, with a darker and even more aggressive feel to it! It has the signature elements of that make up LOST SOCIETY, and we’ve put in more groove riffage, more mind-blistering guitar shredding and some of the fastest stuff we’ve ever done!
“Look out, this ones gonna be FASTER, LOUDER and we’re more pissed off than ever!!”
LOST SOCIETY‘s debut album, “Fast Loud Death”, entered the official chart in Finland at position No. 25. Released in March 2013 via Nuclear Blast Records, the CD was recorded at Sonic Pump Studios (FINNTROLL, SONATA ARCTICA, OMNIUM GATHERUM) in Helsinki, Finland with producer Nino Laurenne (AMORPHIS, ENSIFERUM, LORDI) and it featured cover artwork by Ed Repka (MEGADETH, DEATH, SANCTUARY, VENOM).
Founded in early 2010 by thrash/speed metal enthusiast Samy Elbanna in the Finnish town of Jyväskylä, LOST SOCIETY played a number of gigs around Finland before taking part in the world-renowned GBOB (Global Battle Of the Bands). After winning the preliminary round in their hometown, they were invited to the finals held in Helsinki, where they prevailed over 13 other contestants. The grand finals of GBOB 2012 took place at The Scala in London on December 9, 2012 and featured 18 bands from all over the world, including LOST SOCIETY.
LOST SOCIETY is:
Samy Elbanna – Vocals, Guitar
Arttu Lesonen – Guitar
Mirko Lehtinen – Bass
Ossi Paananen – Drums
SONATA ARCTICA: Second ‘Pariah’s Child’ Trailer
Reposted from Blabbermouth.net
Finnish melodic metallers SONATA ARCTICA will release their eighth studio album, “Pariah’s Child”, on March 28 via Nuclear Blast. The cover artwork for the CD can be seen below.
“Pariah’s Child” track listing:
01. The Wolves Die Young
02. Running Lights
03. Take One Breath
04. Cloud Factory
06. What Did You Do In The War, Dad?
07. Half A Marathon Man
08. X Marks The Spot
10. Larger Than Life
The second trailer for the album is available at this location.
Comments SONATA ARCTICA vocalist Tony Kakko: “There are some instant SONATA ’greatest-hits’ songs there, which feels good.
“I think we reached the result we had in mind, each of us in our own field.
“We went on to create the next SONATA ARCTICA power metalesque album and I think we achieved it adequately.
“I have to say that I had drifted pretty far away from those ‘days of thunder,’ that speedy, happy-go-lucky attitude.
“I was happy to notice this style can still make me smile. It’s good. Music has to do that to me. It also shows the other older songs in a totally new light for me.
“I can now understand and appreciate why the fans enjoy what we did in the early days.”
Regarding the new CD title and cover artwork, Kakko said: “As always, it’s pretty hard coming up with a name for the new baby. I tried to approach it from many angles; how this is our eighth album and how easy it would be to abuse that fact. All the symbolism of figure eight, eternity and so on. But that just did not feel right, as it’s been done so many times. Then I started to think how we’d in ways abandoned our ‘totem animal,’ the wolf and all what comes with the territory.
“As the music on the album is bowing more towards the ‘old’ SONATA, meaning more power metal-style elements and wolves in many of the songs in one form or another, it was clear we need a wolf on the cover. An abandoned wolf. A pariah. Or pariah’s child, actually. The new generation to bring the old logo back.”
SONATA ARCTICA last August parted ways with bassist Marko Paasikoski and replaced him with Pasi Kauppinen (SILENT VOICES, ex-REQUIEM, WINTERBORN).
The band will launch a European headlining tour in support of “Pariah’s Child” on April 10 in Eindhoven, The Netherlands.
SONATA ARTICA‘s latest album, “Stones Grow Her Name”, was released in Europe on May 18, 2012 and in North America on May 22, 2012 via Nuclear Blast Records.
“Stones Grow Her Name” sold around 2,100 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD landed at position No. 9 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.
