VIXEN Guitarist JAN KUEHNEMUND Dies

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

The official Facebook page of the platinum-selling all-female ’80s band VIXEN has been updated with the following message:

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of VIXEN founder and lead guitarist, Jan Kuehnemund, who lost a fierce battle with cancer on Thursday, October 10, 2013.

“Though most well known for her gifted guitar playing and other musical talents, Jan was a rare friend and beautiful in every sense of the word. Humble, thoughtful, loyal and kind, she was the most gracious of women, possessing the quiet strength of a true warrior. She genuinely loved and appreciated her friends and fans more than most could ever know. Those who were most fortunate to have known her and loved her are heartbroken at the loss of Jan, whose spirit will shine through her music eternally.

Jan was very courageous. Never complained. Never gave up. The cancer beat her body but it NEVER broke her spirit at any point.

“Up until the actual moment that she died, she really believed she was going back home.

Jan… you will be missed… but never forgotten.”

Jan Kuehnemund was only 51 years old at the time of her death.

VIXEN‘s last studio album, “Live & Learn”, was released in 2006.

The group, whose latest lineup featured Kuehnemund alongside Jenna Sanz-Agero (vocals), Lynn Louise Lowrey (bass), and Kat Kraft (drums), reformed several times, most recently in 2008, resulting in the live release “Live In Sweden”, which arrived in 2009.

“Live & Learn” was VIXEN‘s first studio recording to feature Kuehnemund since 1990’s “Rev It Up”.

Kuehnemund reformed VIXEN in 2001 for the Voices of Metal tour with a lineup that had to be revamped 10 dates into the trek. Undeterred, with less than a month of rehearsals, the three new members successfully finished the run.

VIXEN‘s original members, Kuehnemund, vocalist Janet Gardner, drummer Roxy Petrucci and bassist Share Ross appeared together on VH1‘s “Bands Reunited” in October 2004 to reminisce about their start on L.A.’s Sunset Strip and their rise to fame in the late 1980s, before the onset of grunge in the early 1990s displaced metal at the top of the charts. They also took part in a short performance for the program.

GardnerPetrucci and Ross are currently performing together in a new band called JANETSHAREROXYGINA. The group’s lineup is rounded out by Gina Stile, who was the guitarist on VIXEN‘s “Tangerine” album.

In a statement on her Facebook page, Ross wrote: “Much more than simply a brilliant guitarist and amazing songwriter, Jan was one of the kindest souls you could ever hope to meet. She remembered everyone’s birthdays and special occasions with gifts and was one of the most gracious women on the planet.

“Through her year-long battle with cancer, Jan was very courageous. She never complained and never gave up. The cancer beat her body but it never broke her spirit at any moment.

“For those of you who wondered why VIXEN never reunited, we actually did reunite.

“We had resolved our differences and were wholeheartedly looking forward to playing together again.

“In January 2013, only days before the announcement was to be made public, Jan was given her cancer diagnosis. She requested that we keep her illness private and out of respect for her wishes when press and fans asked us why we were not back together, we replied ‘it’s a matter of timing.’ Since then we’ve been in regular contact with her and offered our loving support while continually hoping to make 2014 the year of VIXEN. However, it was not meant to be.

“Our condolences go out to her family.

“Memorial services will be announced at a later date.

Jan, you will be missed. But never forgotten.

“Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.”

In April 2013 interview with GuitarWorld.comRoss stated about the formation of JANETSHAREROXYGINA: “We’ve been talking about getting back together as VIXEN for a while. I know some people think there are some big shenanigans going on, but the fact is we’re all still friends with Jan. The timing just isn’t right. So, we’ve decided to let go of the VIXEN thing for now and reached out to Gina. Out of respect for Jan, we’re not going to call it VIXEN and instead calling it JSRG.”

ICED EARTH: Lyric Video For ‘Plagues Of Babylon’ Title Track

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

North American metallers ICED EARTH will release their new album, “Plagues Of Babylon”, for a January 2014 via Century Media Records. The cover artwork was created and illustrated by Eliran Kantor (TESTAMENTATHEISTSIGHANACRUSISGWAR).

Says ICED EARTH vocalist/guitarist Jon Schaffer: “This is a seriously heavy album with a seriously brutal album cover. I’m sure it will go down as a classic in the epic ICED EARTH catalog.”

“Plagues Of Babylon” track listing:

01. Plagues Of Babylon
02. Democide
03. The Culling
04. Among The Living Dead
05. Resistance
06. The End?
07. If I Could See You
08. Cthulhu
09. Peacemaker
10. Parasite
11. Spirit Of The Times
12. Highwayman

The official lyric video for the “Plagues Of Babylon” title track can be seen atthis location.

Speaking to Metal4 magazine at the Rockharz open-air festival in Germany in July, Schaffer said about the upcoming CD: “It’s a bit of a different thing for us, because it’s half of a concept and the other half is [standalone] tracks. Musically, I think it’s just another step in the right direction. It’s really heavy, it’s very melodic. It has a really epic feeling. Even though there isn’t, like, a monster, long epic track, the overall feel of the songs is very epic. I mean, there’s no ‘Dante’s Inferno’ or ‘Gettysburg’ or the ‘Something Wicked’ trilogy or something like that on here, but I’m really happy with it.”

ICED EARTH recently parted ways with drummer Brent Smedley for “personal family reasons.” He has since been replaced by Raphael Saini (CHAOSWAVE).

ICED EARTH has been hitting it relentlessly, with the recent studio album, “Dystopia”, being the most toured album in the band’s illustrious history.

One of the many highlights of the “World Dystopia Tour”, a headline show at the historic Kourion Amphitheatre in Cyprus, was recently released on Blu-ray, DVD and in many other formats under the title “Live In Ancient Kourion”.

“Dystopia” was released in October 2011 via Century Media Records. The CD marked the band’s recording debut with singer Stu Block (INTO ETERNITY), who joined ICED EARTH in March 2011 following the departure of Matt Barlow.

KATAKLYSM: ‘Elevate’ Video Teaser

Reposted from Blabbermouth.net

A teaser for “Elevate”, the new video from Montreal, Quebec, Canada-based death metallers KATAKLYSM, can be seen at this location. The full clip will make its online debut on Thursday, October 17.

The “Elevate” video was filmed in Belgrade, Serbia with acclaimed director Ivan Colic from iCode Productions (EX DEOSOILWORKMOONSPELLALESTORMKAMELOT).

Ivan Colic previously worked with KATAKLYSM frontman Maurizio Iacono on KATAKLYSM‘s “Push The Venom” video and EX DEO‘s “Romulus” and “Final War (Battle Of Actium)” clips.

According to KATAKLYSM, the plan was to bring the viewers into a visual masterpiece of chaos, a chaos based around the ideals of death, the purpose of life, the human factor, and the semi-coma state that most people in this world exist in.

Said Iacono: “In a nutshell, we believe we wrote the most intense, intricate storyline for a video clip ever made in death metal and our genre. Big statement? Well, we’ve got big ideas and we need to put it to life with crazy visuals. We hired the man who has the balls and the artistic capacity to execute this task plus one of the best special FX teams in Europe to back him up. It’s time to up the game. We’re back and we’re swinging hard.”

“Elevate” comes off KATAKLYSM‘s new album, “Waiting For The End To Come”, which will be released on October 29 in North America via Nuclear Blast. The artwork by Eliran Kantor (TESTAMENTHATEBREED) will be featured on the deluxe digipak and LP versions of the effort. The cover by Peter Sallai (SABATON) will be featured on the standard jewel case and limited edition cassette tape versions.

“This other version of the new art made by Eliran Kantor represents a more iconic and epic approach,” commented Iacono. “A man representing all of humanity, shaking the foundation of existence and ultimately beginning the process of destruction. The main foundation is depicted here as the famous KATAKLYSM ’tribal sun’ logo. It does not represent the end of KATAKLYSM by any means; more the beginning of a new era after the end of a certain existence.”

The follow-up to 2010’s “Heaven’s Venom”“Waiting For The End To Come” was recorded by KATAKLYSM guitarist Jean-François Dagenais, who has previously worked with MALEVOLENT CREATIONMISERY INDEX and DESPISED ICON, among others, and mixed by Chris “Zeuss” Harris (SUFFOCATIONHATEBREEDARSIS).

* The Making Of “The Dream Calls For Blood”

In a recent interview with Metal CovenantDEATH ANGEL guitarist Rob Cavestany stated about “The Dream Calls For Blood”: “The title is basically our motto. It’s what we’re talking about, you know. In our point of view the dream being our band and keeping the band going and making music for your life. The blood is all the sacrifice and all hard work that goes into it and that’s the metaphor for that. It’s not only meant for music. It’s also meant for other people to relate in their own life and goals that they’re trying to achieve and the sacrifices that it takes to achieve these goals. And along with that, there’s also a tinge of aggression in there about other people that cut corners and don’t quite go through all the steps it takes to achieve the goal the right way. So there’s a little bit of a middle finger to those people that go about it that way and don’t fully respect what it takes.”

DEATH ANGEL‘s North American headlining tour in support of “The Dream Calls For Blood” will kick off on October 18 in San Francisco. Support on the trek will come from 3 INCHES OF BLOODBATTLECROSSREVOCATION and DIAMOND PLATE.
